The 2026 Halloween Trivia Demand Report

Built Friday, October 16, 2026, from past-years data at Jon's direction.

Every number is sourced and dated. Estimates say ESTIMATE next to them.

Halloween 2026 falls on Saturday, October 31 — a full weekend for venues.

1. The short version

  • October is our biggest trivia month, and it starts earlier every year.
  • October store sales: $29.97 in 2024 → $292.88 in 2025 → $291.97 in the first 16 days of 2026 alone (Shopify, pulled Oct 16, 2026).
  • The money peaks the week BEFORE Halloween, not Halloween week. In 2025 the top week was Oct 20–26.
  • The subscription now carries October: 52% of October sales in 2025, about 90% so far in 2026.
  • Our whole Halloween line is two products: one $15 pack and one free question set. The Harry Potter shelf next to it outsold the Halloween pack five to one last October.

2. What America searches

The market (NRF 2026 Halloween survey, 7,889 U.S. consumers, Sept 1–9, 2026):

Fact Number
Expected total U.S. Halloween spending, 2026 $13.5 billion (2025: $13.1B, a record)
Average planned spending per person $115.14 (2025: $114.45)
Share of consumers planning to celebrate 74% (2025: 73%)
Share who start shopping in September or earlier 49% (2016: 34%)
Costume spending $4.4 billion expected
Shoppers planning to buy at local or small businesses 13% (2016: 7%)

Source: National Retail Federation, https://nrf.com/research-insights/holiday-data-and-trends/halloween and https://nrf.com/blog/halloween-shoppers-find-ways-to-stretch-their-budgets

What this means for trivia: half the country starts Halloween in September now. Google's Frightgeist costume rankings (released Oct 14, 2026) are built on costume searches that spiked in September. Demand for Halloween content is a September–October wave, not an October 31 spike.

Our own store proves the same curve (Shopify weekly sales, all products, pulled Oct 16, 2026):

Week starting 2024 sales (orders) 2025 sales (orders) 2026 sales (orders)
Last week of September $0.00 (0) — wk of Sep 30 $59.99 (3) — wk of Sep 29 $243.45 (16) — wk of Sep 28
First full week of October $9.99 (1) $20.97 (3) $168.99 (8)
Mid-October week $0.00 (1) $74.98 (3) $106.98 (4, week still open)
Week before Halloween $9.99 (1) $105.96 (6) — peak not reached yet
Halloween week $14.98 (3) $30.98 (2) not reached yet
Week after Halloween $39.96 (2) $60.96 (5) not reached yet

Read: 2025 peaked Oct 20–26, then fell during Halloween week itself. Hosts buy before the party week, not during it. The selling window for 2026 is open right now and closes around Oct 26.

3. What sells here in October — our order history

October product sales, every October on record (Shopify analytics, pulled Oct 16, 2026; the store's first October was 2024):

Product Oct 2024 Oct 2025 Oct 1–16, 2026
Weekly Trivia Subscription — $152.95 (7 orders) $261.97 (10 orders)
Halloween Trivia Night Theme Pack $9.99 (1) $14.99 (1) $15.00 (1)
Free Halloween Questions and Answers $0 (2 orders) $0 (2 orders) $0 (4 orders)
Harry Potter packs + Hogwarts Houses (5 products) $0 (0) $74.98 (6 orders) $0 (0, so far)
Oktoberfest Trivia Night Theme Pack — $29.98 (2) —
All other products $19.98 (2) $19.98 (2) $15.00 (1)
October total $29.97 (5 orders) $292.88 (20 orders) $291.97 (19 orders, half month)

Facts worth pausing on:

  • October 2026 is within a dollar of all of October 2025 ($291.97 vs $292.88) — with two weeks left, including the historical peak week.
  • The Halloween pack sells exactly one copy every October. Price rose $9.99 → $14.99 → $15.00; volume never moved.
  • The free Halloween question set is our most-ordered Halloween item every year — 2, then 2, then 4 orders in just the first half of this October. Demand for Halloween questions is real; it lands on the free product, not the paid pack.
  • Spooky-adjacent beats Halloween-branded. Last October the Harry Potter shelf (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert, Hogwarts Houses) made $74.98 — five times the Halloween pack. October buyers buy the franchise shelf, not the single seasonal pack.
  • ESTIMATE: full-month October 2026 lands near $430 (± $40) if the rest of the month follows the 2025 late-October pattern. Method: $291.97 banked by Oct 16, plus the 2025 Oct 20–31 pace of about $137, adjusted for this year's higher base. This is an estimate, not a record.

4. The questions it can't answer

Honest note first: the query-level Search Console pull (last year's exact Halloween search phrases) is not in this version. It needs the live Search Console session and is marked for the next refresh — the data stays available, since Search Console keeps 16 months. What follows is the evidence already in hand.

Gap 1 — One pack, no ladder. Our Harry Potter shelf sells in four difficulty tiers (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert) and made $74.98 last October. Our Halloween line has exactly two products (verified in the catalog Oct 16, 2026):

Halloween catalog today Price Status
Halloween Trivia Night Theme Pack $15.00 Active
Free Halloween Questions and Answers $0.00 Active

No kids' Halloween pack. No difficulty tiers. No horror-movie Halloween pack. Every Halloween searcher who wants anything except one mid-level pack finds nothing to buy.

Gap 2 — Searchers want questions with answers, ready to run. The top search results for Halloween trivia are long question listicles (25–100 questions on a page). Our own "25 Halloween Trivia Questions and Answers" post ranks at the top of that search today (Google search, Oct 16, 2026: https://cheaptrivia.com/blogs/trivia-talk/halloween-trivia-questions-and-answers-for-your-next-spooky-event). Listicles hand a host raw questions only — no rounds, no scorecards, no answer sheets, no hosting structure. The free product's order counts (Section 3) show hosts grab the ready-made free set instead. The unanswered demand is a complete, tiered, ready-to-run Halloween night — the exact thing our subscription delivers weekly and our Halloween shelf barely sells once a year.

Gap 3 — This year's Halloween is not in any question bank yet. The 2026 costume wave (Section 5) runs on a horror film, a horror game sequel, and a new Odyssey movie — all from the last twelve months. No pack written before this fall can ask about them. Fresh questions tied to what people are actually wearing this year do not exist for sale anywhere yet, ours included.

5. The costumes it's wearing — 2026

Google Frightgeist 2026 (released Oct 14, 2026): costumes ranked by searches that spiked in September 2026 versus the year before. Trending rank, not sales counts.

Top 10 trending costumes, 2026:

# Costume From
1 Buddy the Unicorn Horror film "Buddy"
2 NeeDoh Viral squishy toy
3 Nikki Horror film "Obsession"
4 Agamemnon "The Odyssey" (Christopher Nolan)
5 Lily Love Braids "Poppy Playtime" (horror game)
6 Oliver Tree Musician
7 Verity "Minecraft" horror series
8 Carl "Dungeon Crawler Carl" (book series)
9 Disco Scooby-Doo Scooby-Doo
10 Hazel Hook "Descendants: Wicked Wonderland"

Kids' top 10: Dolly Parton (1), Ella Langley, Dumpling, Shakira, Ash Ketchum (Pokémon), Hannah Montana, Spider-Gwen, Michael Jackson in his "Thriller" era, Pomni (The Amazing Digital Circus), Grogu.

Notes for question writers:

  • Horror runs the list: the #1, #3, and #5 costumes all come from horror properties, and Google flags mascot horror and gothic horror among the year's top trending horror searches.
  • Michael Jackson "Thriller" costume searches are at a 10-year high (Google data, reported Oct 15, 2026).
  • Last year's list looked nothing like this: KPop Demon Hunters characters held the top 5 spots in 2025. Costume trivia has a one-year shelf life.
  • Also trending in the top 25: Captain Clark (Backrooms), Thragg and Viltrumite (Invincible), Bowser Jr., Doctor Doom, Dr. Frank-n-Furter (Rocky Horror).

6. What this means in money

Prices used: packs $15, subscription $60/month ($1 first month), $16/week.

  • The subscription is the October business: $261.97 of $291.97 so far this month (about 90%). Halloween traffic that lands on the $1-first-month offer is worth more than the same traffic landing on a $15 pack — each new monthly subscriber is $60/month recurring after month one.
  • The Halloween pack's ceiling today is one sale per October ($15). A tiered Halloween shelf (Easy/Hard, kids, horror-movie) copies a pattern already proven five-to-one on the Harry Potter shelf in the same month. ESTIMATE: a three-pack Halloween ladder matching last year's Harry Potter pattern would be worth roughly $75–150 per October in pack sales, plus the subscription traffic it pulls. Estimate, based on the Section 3 comparison only.
  • The free question set is the magnet (4 orders in 16 days, double last year's pace). It already feeds the store; the report gate and the pack ladder give that traffic somewhere to go.

7. Moves this report supports (all inside the approved plan)

  1. 1. Sell to the peak, not the holiday: push the Halloween pack, the free set, and the $1-first-month subscription hardest now through Oct 26.
  2. 2. Cross-sell the Harry Potter shelf on every Halloween page — it outsold Halloween five to one last October.
  3. 3. Build the Halloween ladder (difficulty tiers + kids) and one fresh 2026-costumes round before next October; this year's fresh round can still ship as a subscription bonus week.
  4. 4. Keep the free set free — it is the top of the funnel — and gate this report's full deck for email, per the plan.

8. What is NOT in this version (next refresh)

  • Search Console query-level data for Oct–Nov 2025 (exact phrases, impressions, click-through). Needs the live console session; data remains inside the 16-month retention window.
  • A direct Google Trends 5-year export for "halloween trivia." Seasonality here rests on NRF's ten-year shopping-timing comparison, Google's September-spike Frightgeist method, and our own three Octobers of sales records.
  • October 2026 figures are through Oct 16 only, pulled the same day.

Sources pulled October 16, 2026: Shopify store analytics (sales by product and by week, Octobers 2024–2026 and surrounding weeks); Shopify catalog query (Halloween-titled products); National Retail Federation 2026 Halloween survey; Google Frightgeist 2026 via USA TODAY and Bloody Disgusting (both Oct 14–15, 2026). No advertising data used; no figures invented.
