About Christmas Advertising

Christmas as we know it was partly invented in ad agencies. Artist Haddon Sundblom painted Coca-Cola's Santa Claus from 1931, fixing the red-suited image in the public mind. Rudolph was created in 1939 by Montgomery Ward copywriter Robert L. May as a store giveaway booklet. The 1897 New York Sun editorial “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” became one of the most reprinted newspaper pieces in history. In the UK, the John Lewis Christmas advert — running since 2007 — has become a national event, and the Coca-Cola “Holidays are Coming” trucks have rolled every season since 1995.
