About Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

Ernest Saves Christmas released November 11, 1988. Directed by John R. Cherry III. Jim Varney stars as Ernest P. Worrell, a goofy taxi driver who becomes entangled in Santa's search for a successor. Douglas Seale plays the aging Santa who needs to retire. Noelle Parker plays Harmony Starr, a runaway teen. Oliver Clark plays Joe Carruthers, the chosen Santa successor. Set in Orlando Florida — a sunny, palm-tree-lined Christmas setting that defied genre conventions.

$28M box office on a $6M budget — a surprise Thanksgiving 1988 Disney hit. Part of the Ernest franchise that also includes Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Goes to Jail, and Ernest Scared Stupid. Ernest's famous catchphrase "KnowwhutImean, Vern?" doesn't appear directly in Christmas (no Vern), but is a defining feature of the franchise. Jim Varney died of cancer in 2000, ending the Ernest series. The film remains a cult-classic 80s holiday gem for Gen X.
