About Hanukkah

Hanukkah — the Festival of Lights, from the Hebrew word for dedication — commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes (around 167–160 BCE). According to tradition, the Temple's menorah oil, enough for a single day, burned for eight. The hanukkiah holds nine candles: eight branches plus the shamash used to light the others. Hanukkah lasts eight nights, usually falling in November or December, and its traditions include the dreidel game, chocolate gelt, potato latkes, and jelly-filled sufganiyot doughnuts.

How to Host a Hanukkah-Themed Trivia Night

Light the night's candle before the game starts — it takes two minutes and sets the tone. Serve latkes or sufganiyot between rounds. Keep the lighting warm and low-key; this theme works best as a cozy, conversational night.
