About Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a week-long celebration of African heritage, observed December 26 through January 1. Each of the seven days honors one of the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). The kinara holds seven candles — the mishumaa saba: three red, three green, and one black. Other symbols include the mkeka (mat), mazao (crops), muhindi (corn), the kikombe cha umoja (unity cup), and zawadi (gifts). The Karamu feast is traditionally held on December 31.

How to Host a Kwanzaa-Themed Trivia Night

Open by lighting the day's kinara candle and naming its principle — players love learning as they go. The Karamu feast theme makes this a natural dinner-and-trivia event. Keep teams mixed so the night stays social and celebratory.
